2013 Buick Enclave Headed to the Big Apple with Upgraded Interior New York Auto Show

29 Feb

This moody image previews the revised cabin that will grace the 2013 Buick Enclave crossover. Buick’s Lambda-platform offering is expected to get some exterior revisions, similar to those already announced for its GMC Acadia sibling, as well. The new Enclave will make its public debut at the 2012 New York show.

The image shows wraparound ambient lighting that mirrors the motif found in other new Buicks. We’re glad to see that the Enclave keeps its extra-classy analog clock. There’s some additional brightwork visible, including a new bezel for the center stack—that area houses a new infotainment system and fresh HVAC controls, both of which match those found on the 2013 Acadia. Enclaves have always had the most luxurious interiors of all the Lambdas, and we don’t expect that to change with the refresh.

Buick also promises “industry-exclusive” safety tech; all 2013 Lambda crossovers will use a new front center airbag, which keeps front-seat occupants from hitting each other in side-impact collisions.

We’ll see the rest of the Enclave—under brighter lights—at the beginning of April.

Volkswagen Prices 2013 CC Sedan From $31,430, Top Trim Costs $42,240

29 Feb

2013 Volkswagen CC

Volkswagen has announced pricing for its 2013 CC sedan just ahead of the car’s March on-sale date, and while the cost to bring one home has increased over last year, the car now includes additional standard equipment. The CC went under the refresh knife this year; the result is a car that, while still good-looking, isn’t as pretty as before. (For the skinny on all the 2013 updates, read our story here.)

Prices for the 2013 CC span from $31,430 for the base 2.0T Sport all the way up to $42,240 for the VR6 4Motion Executive. For 2013, VW dropped the 2.0T Lux Plus and 2.0T Lux Limited, although it added new 2.0T Sport Plus and VR6 Lux trims. The sporty 2.0T R-Line will carry over to the 2013 CC lineup, but info and pricing will arrive at a later date. The details:

  • 2.0T Sport: $31,430 + $1100 for optional six-speed dual-clutch automatic ($2095 increase over 2012; a base model without LED running lights and adaptive front lighting is available by special order for $360 less but will not be stocked by dealers)
  • 2.0T Sport Plus: $33,670 (New trim level for 2013)
  • 2.0T Lux: $36,175 ($3935 increase over 2012)
  • VR6 Lux: $38,550 (New trim level for 2013, combines 2.0T Lux’s features with V-6 engine)
  • VR6 4Motion Executive: $42,240 ($1330 increase over 2012)

All 2013 CCs get bi-xenon headlights and LED taillights as standard, and automatic climate control is now included even on the base 2.0T Sport. We find it a bit odd that 2.0T Sport models without the fancy front lighting won’t be stocked on dealer lots, but the extra kit costs just $360 more. That’s a good deal for LED running lights and adaptive front headlights. Besides the new styling and reshuffled trim levels, the biggest change to the 2013 CC is the adoption of a standard rear bench that provides seating for a fifth passenger; the previous four-place arrangement provided an air of sophistication but also likely cost VW more than a few sales. We will drive the car in the near future, so check back soon for our first-drive report.

Laceration Hazard Leads to Grass Trimmer Recall

29 Feb

In the wake of findings that the shaft of trimmers can crack, leading to detachment of the lower gear case and cutting attachment, Honda announced a recall. Their grass trimmers pose a laceration hazard to the operator as well as bystanders, therefore the US Consumer Product Safety Commission, along with American Honda Motor Company, has decided to recall them immediately. A total of eleven incidents of broken or cracked shafts have been brought to the attention of Honda so far, while no injuries have been reported as yet, according to news reports.

As a Sumter personal injury lawyer, I hope that nobody is adversely affected by this recalled product. If you or a loved one were harmed by an unsafe consumer product, you may reach a personal injury attorney who can evaluate your case and help protect your legal rights. Name That Shifter, No. 65: 1990 Chevrolet Beretta GTZ

29 Feb

Name That Shifter 65

Shifter No. 65

On Monday, we presented this week’s shifter and asked you to identify the make and model of the vehicle from whence it came. We figured the anonymous-looking shifter might give you more trouble than it did. The first commenter to correctly identify it as a 1990 Chevrolet Beretta GTZ’s five-speed manual was Mike Jackson. Mike will receive a Save the Manuals button and sticker as a reward.

The Beretta GTZ pictured here is from our December 1989 issue. Conceived as the top-dog Beretta, the GTZ combined GM’s most powerful Quad 4 engine with a sportier suspension tune. The 180-hp Beretta charged to 60 mph from a standstill in 7.7 seconds, and stuck to the skidpad to the tune of 0.84 g. At the time, the GTZ’s skidpad figure was the highest we’d recorded for a front-drive car.

Mitsubishi Recalls Cars for Seat Belt Failure

29 Feb

With the failure of a seat belt buckle, thereby increasing the risk of injury or death of passengers, Mitsubishi Fuso (MFTA) has made the decision to recall 2012 FEC52, FEC72, and FEC92 trucks. The recalled trucks were manufactured from February 10, 2011 to April 8, 2011. During assembly, incorrect passenger’s side seat belt buckles were installed. Mitsubishi Fuso is in the process of notifying owners, and dealers will soon replace the passenger’s side seat belt buckle free of charge, according to news reports.

As a Florence personal injury attorney, I hope that nobody is adversely affected by this unsafe product. If you or a loved one were harmed by an unsafe product, make sure others are aware of the problem by informing a safety agency. It also may be critical to hire a personal injury attorney who can evaluate your case and assess your claim. An attorney will walk you through the legal steps associated with your case and help complete all mandatory paperwork and documentation. An attorney can also answer any questions you may have to help make sure you get the best outcome for your personal injury claim. Discuss your case with an attorney today, they may be able to help get you on the right track.

Carlisle Food Service Recalls Mugs Due to Burn Hazard

29 Feb

In the backdrop of findings that certain Carlisle Food Service beverage cups and mugs can break down when exposed to hot liquids, thereby posing a burn hazard, the US Consumer Product Safety Commission issued a voluntary recall. The recall was conducted in cooperation with Carlisle Food Service Products, of Oklahoma City. So far, there have been three reports of cups and mugs breaking. Carlisle has urged consumers to stop using the recalled products until further notice, according to news reports.

As a Columbia personal injury lawyer, I hope nobody is harmed by these defective cups and mugs. If you or a loved one were harmed by a product such as this, discuss your case with a personal injury attorney who can evaluate your case and help protect your rights. When you have an attorney on your side, you are more likely to get the results you deserve for your case. LeMons Good/Bad Idea of the Week: Bribing with Diorama of Judge’s Beloved Impala

29 Feb

The 24 Hours of LeMons Supreme Court, the members of which take as their model the frontier judges of the American Wild West, have sanctioned bribery as a means of ensuring mutual respect in the racer-judge relationship. In fact, so central is the judicial bribe to the LeMons BS Inspection process that we apply a BRIBED stencil to the car of the generous team. How does it work? Let’s say the documentation on your LeMons car is a little shaky, and you need to convince the judges that you really did find those Bilsteins and that nice header at U-Pull-It for 25 bucks. If you have a cheated-up BMW E30 or Acura Integra, you’re probably unlikely to get away with it, although the LeMons Supreme Court still appreciates the gesture of a nice bribe, which means we’ll refer to you as a “rule-bender” rather than as a “shameless fraudster.” But bribes from teams running quasi-credible $500 cars grease the wheels of justice for gray-area calls. The most common bribe is a bottle of quality alcohol or some of the local cuisine, but some teams get quite creative. California-based Dirty Duck Racing raised the bribery bar to new heights last fall, at the Skankaway Anti-Toe-Fungal 500 at Infineon Raceway, and it left me uncharacteristically speechless.
A little background for those who haven’t been avidly following the Murilee Martin Lifestyle Brand™: I owned a hooptied-out 1965 Chevy Impala sedan that evolved from college art project to daily driver to 13-second drag-strip toy over the course of a decade, and I chronicled my adventures with this car in a series of autobiographical essays. Many LeMons racers followed this series last year, and Dirty Duck Racing took bribe inspiration from the “Road to Victory” illustration above.
The Dirty Ducks have been running a VW GTI in West Coast races for years now, and for the Skankaway 500 they Halloween-ified their magician-themed car.
The Ducks, it turns out, have a pro model maker on the team, and so they commissioned him to build a 1:25-scale replica of the “Road To Victory” image of my Impala. When they gave it to me during the BS Inspection, I was stunned by the magnitude of this gift.
My Impala was a sedan, and the only die-cast or plastic toy ’65 Impalas available are fastback coupes. But, really, who cares? Let’s look at the details of the Dirty Duck bribe.
The patina on my Impala evolved over the course of a decade; it started with a thick coat of some sort of gloss-gray industrial paint, to which I applied various helpings of gray and black rattle-can paint plus greasy hand prints over the years. As you can see here, the 1:25 Impala Hell Project car very nicely captures the look of the original.
The road and backdrop portion showed real inspiration as well; rather than just replicate my black-and-white illustration of my Impala driving on California’s Interstate 5 into the Nagasaki mushroom cloud, the Ducks created their own color artwork. (Aside: My original image was the first serious work I ever did on Photoshop back in 1993, using a 386 with four megs of RAM—that’s megs, not gigs—running Photoshop 2.5. I recall my computer requiring 25 minutes to save the file between changes.)  The mushroom cloud in the diorama appears to be from the Upshot-Knothole 1953 test series.
In honor of the Dirty Duck GTI, the VW Rabbit emblem has been worked into the clouds.
In fact, you can see the Dirty Ducks GTI itself off at the side of the road, complete with spin-out skid marks leading to its final resting place. The Road to Victory is treacherous!
The model maker clearly read every word of the Impala Hell Project saga, judging from the number of obscure details worked into this thing. For example, after moving from California to Georgia, I fixed the rust around the rear window—rust in that spot is a GM-cars-in-California certainty, by the way—using beer-can metal and J.B. Weld. Above you can see the patch on the 1:25 Impala . . .
. . . and here’s the patch on the real car, circa 1995.
The cryptic serial numbers on the doors (intended to call to mind archetypes of full-size “official vehicle” Chevrolets) that I applied soon after buying the car in 1990 were recreated as well.
Here’s the original, soon after application. You can see that the Ducks’ model maker went for the patina the car accrued later in the 1990s.
I find it interesting that the model maker opted to go for a blend of the various incarnations of the Hell Project Impala’s life stages, instead of a slavish reproduction of the car as depicted in the “Road to Victory” image (which is based on a 1991 photograph of the car heading up I-5 to the original Lollapalooza Festival). In the photograph above, I am posing in 1996 at Atlanta Dragway. On the trunklid is an apparatus made from plumbing pipe, which I used to lock my bicycle atop the trunklid during my move to Georgia.
Sure, it’s anachronistic in the diorama, but having the bar was important as part of an effort to capture some of the Impala Hell Project’s more memorable accessories.
Even the 1991-vintage Doll Hut sticker on the trunklid, in its much-oversprayed-and-weathered glory, is reproduced. Truly, this is one of the greatest LeMons Supreme Court judicial bribes ever, and I’ll say it again: Thanks, Dirty Duck Racing!

2013 Jaguar XF Sportbrake

Jaguar’s XF Sportbrake has made its digital debut, and the looks are sharp enough to back up the company’s decision to avoid the dowdy “station wagon” descriptor. Whatever you call it, we’ll have to be calling very loudly indeed: This car will be sold only in Europe. Its real-world debut is scheduled for the 2012 Geneva auto show.

The Volkswagen Up! family is growing rapidly. The three- and five-door Up! models and two rebadged versions—the SEAT Mii and the Škoda Citigo—are already officially out the door, and a flurry of concept cars at the Frankfurt auto show last September promised further spin-offs. At the reveal event for the five-door Up!, VW provided seat time in some of the additional variants planned for production. (Reminder: No Up! model is planned for the U.S. Let’s be sad together.)

VW’s beloved Mk1 Golf Cabriolet combined GTI power and suspension tuning with top-down motoring, and now Volkswagen is at it again—in Europe anyway—as it debuts the Golf GTI Cabriolet. Buzz around such a model started building last year when the company showed its Golf R Cabriolet and GTI Cabriolet concepts to rabid VW addicts at the annual Wörthersee GTI meet in Austria. Although the GTI’s engine has been offered in the Golf Cabriolet for some time, a full GTI-spec version hasn’t previously been available.

Supplier Magna Steyr Creates Oddball MILA Coupic Concept Geneva Auto Show

28 Feb

Magna Steyr MILA Coupic concept

Austrian manufacturer-for-hire and supplier Magna Steyr is bringing a concept car called the “MILA Coupic” to the Geneva auto show. Magna assembles cars for automakers such as Mini, Peugeot, and Mercedes-Benz, but it doesn’t sell a single car under its own name. So why did Magna create the MILA Coupic? It’s a showcase for its engineering, manufacturing, and supply capabilities. The Coupic is the sixth MILA concept created by the company.

The Coupic packs its features and concepts in a high-riding crossover coupe body wearing a bright two-tone paint job. Magna calls the Coupic a three-in-one car, because the two key technologies on display—a trick folding roof and reconfigurable interior—help it to offer multiple packaging options. The roof consists of an unconventional combination of glass and cloth panels; there are front and rear sections that can be opened independently, and each section is itself comprised of several slats.

With the panels closed, the Coupic is a five-passenger vehicle with a stylishly rakish roofline. When either the fore or aft section is opened, the slats stack up accordion-style at one end of the roof opening. Open both the front and rear sections, and you get a pseudo convertible. For its final trick, the Coupic’s rear seats fold up and move forward to close off the front seats from the rest of the vehicle; at that point, the aft roof panels can be opened to create a small pickup bed. We’re looking forward to seeing it in action; at this point, we’re thinking of the Coupic as the two-door spawn of a BMW X6 and a GMC Envoy XUV.

However funky the Coupic’s collection of tech may be, it doesn’t actually preview an entire car. It’s unlikely the roof design, weather-sealing folding rear seats, and Transformer-style pickup-bed mode will ever live together on a production vehicle. But Magna’s current and potential clients may like what they see, so you could see individual elements of this concept in future products wearing more familiar badges.

Fisker Hires Former Chrysler Boss LaSorda, Company Says It’s Been a “Political Football” and Nina is On Hold

28 Feb

2012 Fisker Karma EcoChic

Fisker Automotive has just appointed former Chrysler CEO Tom LaSorda as its chief executive and vice chairman of the board. LaSorda takes over the CEO spot from company namesake and co-founder Henrik Fisker, who will become the board’s executive chairman. LaSorda was the CEO at Chrysler from 2005 to 2007 and worked there as a high-level executive from 2007 to 2009. He was in charge at Chrysler during the final two years of its hostile merger with Daimler and was later a big proponent of the Chrysler-Fiat merger.

After the announcement, we participated in a Q&A session with Fisker and LaSorda. Here’s what we learned:

  • Given LaSorda’s management history, it shouldn’t be a shock that he said Fisker is looking at strategic alliances with larger automakers. He didn’t elaborate on any companies specifically and when pressed said that Fisker is open to the idea but not actively seeking a partnership. We read this as a pretty good sign Fisker will wind up working with a big company down the road.
  • Fisker has built 2000 Karmas so far, and 840 of them have been delivered to dealers. Many, but not all of those, are now with customers.
  • Fisker’s more-affordable model, the Nina, is in a holding pattern. The car was to be designed and built in Delaware, with both of those functions dependent on Fisker getting another $336 million in loans from the U.S. Department of Energy. With that funding on indefinite hold (more on why below), Fisker is looking for more money from private investors. In the meantime, LaSorda says, Nina is still going in “virtual engineering.”
  • “It’s an election year and we’ve been a political football,” Henrik Fisker said when asked why the DOE loans had been frozen. The entire program, which would loan money to renewable-energy businesses in the U.S., has been paused while predominantly Republican members of Congress call for very tight oversight.

Defect Found in Utility Knives

28 Feb

Around 1,800 utility knives were recently recalled, announced the US Consumer Product Safety Commission. Greenlee Textron is conducting the recall by cooperating with the CPSC due to the possibility of the blade mechanism failing. This may cause the blade to fold the incorrect way and cut the user. So far, there has been one incident of the blade folding the wrong direction, however there have not been any injuries. The specific products included in the recall are the Greenlee Hawk Bill with the logo and “Greenlee” printed on their blades, along with specific model numbers. The recalled knives sold for around $20 each and were made in China. Customers are asked to return them immediately in order to get a refund. The products sold in stores between September 2011 and November 2011, according to news reports.

As a Florence personal injury lawyer, I hope that nobody was harmed by this recalled product. Lamborghini SUV Rendered, Coming in Concept Form Soon

Lamborghini SUV (artist's rendering)

What It Is: Lamborghini’s upcoming SUV, which will be previewed soon by a concept version. As these renderings show, the unnamed five-door should have a coupe-like silhouette and extreme angular lines reminiscent of the Aventador. It will fit right into the sports-car manufacturer’s lineup—as much as an SUV can, anyway. This will be the second off-roader by the brand; the crudely styled LM002, an offspring of Lambo’s Cheetah military-vehicle project, was sold from the mid-1980s through the early ’90s.

Motor Coach Panels May Fall During Travel

28 Feb

Model year 2004-2010 motor coaches manufactured from January 2004 to December 2009 have been recalled by Newell Coach Corp. The reason for the recall is an increasing risk of crash or personal injury due to a manufacturing error. An adhesive bond may fail, resulting in a panel falling from the vehicle. If the panel fell from the vehicle while it was moving, this may increase the risk of a collision. The official recall start date and recall remedy will be determined by the firm, according to news reports.

Pininfarina Cambiano Sports-Sedan Concept Revealed Geneva Auto Show

27 Feb

Pininfarina Cambiano concept

Pininfarina, the Italian design house responsible for such classics as the Ferrari 250 GT, the Alfa Romeo Giulietta Spider, and the Cadillac Allanté, has released photos of its new “elegant and refined sports sedan” concept, the Cambiano, ahead of the 2012 Geneva auto show. The concept is named after the town where the firm is based, and where it opened its Styling Center 30 years ago. (Whether the indebted company will exist to celebrate further anniversaries, at least under family ownership, remains uncertain.)

Lancia Florida II Sedan

Lancia Florida II

Press information isn’t available yet, but a report from Automotive News (subscription required) pegs the car as a plug-in extended-range hybrid that incorporates four 80-hp in-wheel electric motors and a diesel turbine (!) engine. The turbine is the range-extender, recharging the batteries when they are depleted; it also will feed power directly to the electric motors if there’s no juice on tap. Thus equipped, the Cambiano supposedly can reach 62 mph in 4.2 seconds and a top speed of 155 mph; short bursts up to 171 mph are also claimed to be possible. The car is said to have a total range of close to 500 miles, including almost 130 miles in pure electric mode. Actual performance and range likely are limited to just enough to get it on the show stand under its own power.

Pininfarina refers to the concept as a sports sedan, despite it not featuring four doors: There is one large door on the driver’s side and two smaller doors on the passenger side, the rear one opening suicide-style. The interior is as cleanly designed as the exterior, and features a wood floor and stitching-free upholstery. In the Automotive News report, Pininfarina says the Cambiano is inspired by the 1957 Lancia Florida II (pictured above). Stay tuned for more details and photos live from Geneva.
