Toyota Teases B-Segment FT-Bh Hybrid Concept with Pics, Video Geneva Auto Show

22 Feb

Toyota FT-Bh hybrid concept

Toyota is bringing the funky-looking FT-Bh small hybrid concept to this year’s Geneva auto show. The automaker released some teaser images and video of the FT-Bh, as well as a few morsels of info.

Toyota FT-Bh hybrid conceptThe concept’s name stands for “Future Toyota B-segment hybrid,” which pretty much sums up what you need to know: The FT-Bh is a B-segment-sized, gas/electric vehicle. The video reveals little, but does show enough to portend a radically styled hatchback—just check out the wild taillights and the undulating pillars at the rear. It’s not clear yet if the car has three or five doors, but Toyota claims it will offer interior space similar to that of a five-door B-segment car.

According to Toyota, the FT-Bh was designed around five key fuel-efficiency-boosting tenets: mass reduction, aerodynamic optimization, powertrain efficiency, thermal-energy management, and electrical efficiency. As a result, the FT-Bh apparently weighs less than a three-door Toyota Aygo (which the company says comes in at roughly 1800 pounds). As for the success of the other tenets, at this point Toyota presumably expects us to use our imagination until more info becomes available.

Interestingly, the company says the hybrid’s low weight was accomplished without using fancy materials. No specifics were given regarding the FT-Bh’s “downsized full hybrid powertrain,” but we expect to know more when the concept hits the Geneva show floor.

LeMons Good/Bad Idea of the Week: LeMons Weddings!

22 Feb

The 24 Hours of LeMons can end up being an all-consuming lifestyle for some of its participants. First you’re spending a lot of time searching Craigslist for Rootes Group products and pre-1970 Toyotas, then you spend more time under the race car than you do in the house, and then, sometimes, you have to fit a wedding into your busy LeMons schedule. For a few racers (and race officials), it makes perfect sense to bring the thrown-rods-and-pit-cuisine ambience of a LeMons race to the nuptials.
The LeMons wedding madness started at the infamous Lamest Day 24 Hours of LeMons at Nelson Ledges in 2009. This was the 24-hours-straight race that featured paddock conditions bearing remarkable similarity to the mud of both Woodstock and the Battle of the Somme, and a Camaro-racing couple decided to tie the knot in the tower, just prior to the green flag on Saturday morning.
The happy couple took a victory lap around the track . . .
. . . and then the groom suited up, climbed in the race car, and nuked the engine within minutes of the race start. That’s a story the grandchildren will be telling circa 2041.
LeMons Chief Perpetrator Jay Lamm did such a fine job officiating at the Nelson Ledges wedding that I asked him to do the honors at my wedding the following summer. Sure, my bride’s family includes several ordained ministers, but I felt it would be better to have Chief Perp Jay apply the Nuptial Duct Tape binding our wrists—a LeMons-influenced tradition that I hope catches on with mainstream wedding planners. Remember, duct tape can stick any two objects together— just like a wedding!
After that, Jay was considering a second career performing marriage ceremonies. At the Painfully Bland Bowl of Thin Lukewarm Oatmeal That Can’t Possibly Offend Anyone, No Matter How Much They Enjoy Being Offended, 24-Hour Season Ender race in Florida (so named because Glenn Beck got several angry protesters to hound the track management about the original Cuba Del Norte–themed moniker), he donned his job-interview suit and joined timing-and-scoring gurus Roland and Stephanie in holy matrimony.
That race, at Palm Beach International Raceway, ran a straight 24 hours, ending at midnight on New Year’s Eve 2010. The wedding set the tone for the delirium to follow.
We’re pretty sure that Martha Stewart will be jumping on the LeMons-style wedding bandwagon soon. Look how happy the guests are!
A few months later, at the 2011 Sears Pointless race, one of the members of Team Hit & Run (which entered a Ford 302–powered Mazda RX-7) arranged to pop the question to his unsuspecting girlfriend during the prerace BS Inspection on Friday.
It was another story for future grandchildren: The team hid the engagement ring inside the car’s air cleaner and arranged with the Justices of the LeMons Supreme Court to find the ring while “looking for cheaty parts.” Total surprise!
Of course the bride-to-be said “yes.” Imagine the pall that would have hung over Team Hit & Run if she’d refused! The RX-7 even ran for most of the weekend, finishing 31st out of 173 entries.
Then Scott Chamberlain, captain of the legendary Porcubimmer team and the man who masterminded the conversion of a BMW 325e into a credible homage to the ’58 Plymouth Fury from “Christine,” got engaged. His racing plans threatened the wedding plans to such an extent that his fiancé commissioned a custom, LeMons-themed dragging-the-grease-smeared-groom-away-from-the-engine-swap wedding-cake topper from Awesome Toppers. Yeah, she’s a keeper!

2012 Fisker Karma Tested: Likable and Real—and Really Heavy

22 Feb

2012 Fisker Karma EcoChic

Nobody can deny (can they?) that the Fisker Karma is the lewdest wedge of car porn to hit the pavement since the onset of the 5-mph bumper. From one 22-inch wheel to the other, the Fisker is a heartthrob, a design spectacularly unchained from the shackles of practicality and brand identity that enslave other automakers. It is an auto-show concept car before it has been horsewhipped into bland banality by the finance, marketing, and engineering departments. It is a car built by a company started by a designer.

2013 Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport Vitesse: The Most Powerful Roadster of All Time

22 Feb

2013 Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport Vitesse

Bugatti announced the impending arrival of the Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport Vitesse in a bravado-laced statement, calling it the culmination of engineers’ efforts to “transfer all the achievements of the Super Sport over to the Grand Sport.” The resultant open-top missile packs 1200 hp, nearly 20 percent more than the Grand Sport convertible’s paltry sum of 1001; torque increases from 922 lb-ft to 1106 lb-ft, so towing the old Bayliner down to the lake for the weekend should be a breeze for this new droptop.

Jeep Unveils Special Grand Cherokee, Compass, and Wrangler for Europe Geneva Auto Show

22 Feb

Jeep Grand Cherokee Sport concept

This year at the Geneva auto show, Jeep will debut three Euro-bound special editions: a Wrangler that will go on sale soon, as well as production-intent Grand Cherokee and Compass “concepts.”

Jeep Grand Cherokee Sports Concept

The Jeep Grand Cherokee Sports concept, pictured above, was designed to be an experiment in style. The outcome is a two-tone Jeep that the company says it will offer on the European market.

Cosmetic changes made to give this Grand Cherokee a sporty look include replacing the roof racks with a new molding and adding a variety of black and chrome accents. It has some similarities to the blacked-out Grand Cherokee concept we saw earlier this year.

The show version is powered by a 3.0-liter V-6 turbo-diesel, putting out 237 hp and a massive 406 lb-ft of torque.

Jeep Compass concept

Jeep Compass Concept

This nameless, Euro-centric spin on the Jeep Compass takes similar cues from the Grand Cherokee Sports concept. It rocks black 18-inch wheels, black grille inserts, and black headlight surrounds; basically, anything Jeep could black out, it did.

While this Compass is a concept in name, Jeep will build and sell two trim levels, Sport and Limited, and offer both front- and all-wheel drive. Each will feature the same 2.2-liter diesel four-cylinder engine, which delivers 161 hp and 236 lb-ft when powering all four wheels; a low-output, 134-hp version of the engine will drive the two-wheel-drive model.

Jeep Wrangler Mountain Edition

Jeep Wrangler Mountain Special Edition

The Jeep Wrangler Mountain was created to stand out, and makes its debut in production form. This special-edition Jeep is based on the Wrangler Sport and will be available in both two- and four-door models.

The exterior gets a black hood decal, Mineral Gray grille, and 17-inch wheels. Another decal, reading “Mountain,” runs along the side of the hood. The ute boasts all-new, “look-at-me” Gecko green paint. Brightly colored special-edition Wranglers are nothing new; allow us to submit the 2010 Wrangler Islander into evidence.

It will be sold with either a 2.8-liter turbo-diesel engine that makes 197 hp and 339 lb-ft or the gas-fired 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 with 280 hp and 256 lb-ft. The diesel can be had with a choice of a five-speed auto or a six-speed manual; the gas-powered engine is offered only with the five-speed automatic. The Wrangler Mountain will be in European dealerships this summer.

Ferrari Previews 599 Replacement with Video Geneva Auto Show

21 Feb

Ferrari 599 replacement teaser

The last day or so has been particularly eventful in the lively arena of Ferrari speculation. The fire was fueled first by a purported shot of the 599 replacement’s rear, and now the company has released a video (see below) promising a reveal of the new V-12 car for next week. The footage shows thinly veiled test vehicles being put through their paces—by none other than Ferrari F1 drivers Fernando Alonso and Felipe Massa—and boldly proclaims: “The most powerful Ferrari ever is about to take its bow.” February 29 is the promised unveil date.

The “most powerful” claim certainly makes sense, as last October Ferrari CEO Amedeo Felisa told Car and Driver the new car would produce more than 700 hp and retain the current front-engine configuration. Rumors say the car will be named F620, which would mean it uses a 6.2-liter V-12. Heretofore, the track-only 599XX was the sole 599 model to crest the 700-hp mark.

We’ll see just how far past 700 that total goes when the wraps come off next week. We expect to see and learn more about the car at the Geneva show next month.

Ganz Recalls Dancing Teapots Due to Burn Hazard

21 Feb

In view of the burn hazard posed by their teapots, the product manufacturer Ganz and the US Consumer Product Safety Commission have decided to recall approximately 2,100 units in the US and another 170 in Canada. The recall took effect immediately. Since it has been found that the handle of the teapot can get very hot when the pot contains hot water, there is a strong the chance the product can result in burn injuries, hence the recall was put into effect. Although there have been no cases of injury reported so far, Ganz is urging consumers not to use the teapots until the company fixes the defect, according to news reports.

As a Sumter personal injury lawyer, I hope that nobody is adversely affected by this product. SRT Teases 2013 Viper’s Carbon-Fiber Airway New York Auto Show

21 Feb

2013 SRT Viper teaser

Here it is, what you’ve all been waiting for: the 2013 SRT Viper! Well, part of it, anyway. SRT has released yet another teaser image of the next Viper on its Facebook page, but this latest peek gives little new insight. (SRT’s previous teaser showed a line drawing of the car’s snake-like front end.)

The image shows what appears to be a vent or an intake (maybe a hood scoop?) that’s covered in what we assume is real carbon fiber. CF was used in the previous Viper, and the new SRT version is expected to make more use of lightweight composites. No stickers here. Further weight savings are expected to come from increased use of aluminum, helping the car shave weight compared to the previous model. Oh, and it looks like the 2013 Viper will be available in red. We’ll have to wait to see what the entire Viper looks like when it debuts at the New York auto show in April. Until then, expect some more teasing.

This Is Most Likely the Rear of Ferrari’s V12 599 Replacement Geneva Auto Show

18 Feb

Just yesterday, Ferrari’s chairman Luca di Montezemolo stated in a company earnings report that the company’s next V-12 supercar will debut at the Geneva auto show in a few weeks. And we believe that the picture you see above is the rear of that car—albeit in not-quite-finished form.

The picture has been circulating on FerrariChat.com, among other places, and the split quad exhausts and taillamps are consistent with those we’ve seen on spy photos of the successor to the 599. Expect the novo V-12 car to make at least a Lamborghini Aventador–besting 700 hp, and perhaps much more. We’ll know more about Maranello’s newest monster as we get approach the Geneva show.

Peugeot 208 GTi and 208 XY Concepts Revealed Geneva Auto Show

17 Feb

Peugeot 208 GTi concept

High-content small cars are all the rage in the world’s mega-cities. BMW’s Mini, the Audi A1, and the Citroën DS3 are leading the charge, but you also can order, say, a very nicely equipped VW Polo in the Old World. Now Peugeot is joining the fun with two concepts based on its B-segment 208; both will be unveiled at the Geneva auto show.

Peugeot 208 GTi concept interior

To us, the 208 GTi concept is the more interesting of the two show cars. Powered by a turbocharged, 1.6-liter version of the BMW-PSA “Prince” engine, it boasts 200 hp and targets the quickest offerings in its class. The interior gets unique stitching on the Alcantara-covered dash; the seat upholstery pairs leather and checkered fabric. The gauges are brushed aluminum, and there is a smaller-diameter steering wheel.

Exterior addenda include a checkered-mesh grille, 18-inch wheels, and chromed double exhaust tailpipe. Fatter tires widen the track, and, while the Geneva concept proudly wears the French flag on the lower lip of its grille, you can also order a British Union Jack (among others) if you’re into multicultural marriages.

Peugeot 208XY concept

For less-enthusiastic drivers, Peugeot also will show the 208 XY concept. This one’s powered by a super-efficient 1.6-liter diesel producing 113 hp. Painted in 16 layers of purple paint, the XY is equipped with a large panoramic roof and is fitted with interior trimmings dedicated to decadence. Leather trims the headliner around the panoramic panel, seats, and dash, as well as on the dashboard. There is cow hide outside, too: The grille is accentuated with “metalized leather.”

Even with their add-ons, the two models do not deviate far from more-common 208 models, and so building them would be easy. While series production of the 208 GTi seems to be a done deal, no decision appears to have been made yet on the XY. Both models would have precursors: The 208 GTi recalls the unforgettable 205 GTi, an icon of the 1980s; the XV recalls the Roland Garros and the Griffe versions of the same 205. And here’s more good news: Both concept cars are fitted with a six-speed manual. That bodes well for potential street versions, and makes them great alternatives to those customers that shun the VW Polo GTI and the 185-hp Audi A1 because of their standard dual-clutch automatics.

Nissan Leaf EV NISMO Race Car Driven: Strap In, Whizz Away, and Take the Checkers—Sort Of

17 Feb

Nissan Leaf Nismo RC

So Nissan has built an electric car that ordinary people can afford, and that car is being sold to the public. Exciting stuff, right? Well, in a way, but the $36,050 (before any federal and/or local tax credits and incentives) Nissan Leaf is full of compromises. It’s sprightly but not fast, comfy but not spacious, gas-free but still range-hampered. It’s also kind of nerdy.

Mopeds Exempt from Drunk-Driving Laws in South Carolina

17 Feb

Do you feel that drinking and driving a moped is safe?

I thought this was a question with an easy answer: No way!

However, it seems that the state of South Carolina saw things a little differently…

The state law, at this time, does not require moped drivers to have a drivers license and considers mopeds exempt from motor-vehicle laws and regulations because they are currently classified as “having a motor of less than 50-cubic centimeters and not capable of going faster than 30 miles per hour.”

Because of this classification, moped drivers were also exempt from DUI laws as recently as this past Wednesday. However, the state Senate passed a bill on February 14, 2012 that says moped drivers will NOT be exempt from state drunken-driving laws.

Before the passing of this bill, some South Carolina magistrates were throwing out cases because the drunk driver was on a moped.

One state Senator has said “I don’t think you should operate a moped drunk. But what are you going to do, suspend their license? You don’t need a license to drive a moped.”

As a personal injury lawyer for George Sink, P.A. Injury Lawyers, I have handled DUI accidents and fatalities far more than that of a comforting number. It’s an utter tragedy and makes me toss and turn at night (especially when underway with a DUI case).

To think that up until this week drunk moped drivers had the luxury of cruising the South Carolina roadways while drinking – with little to no repercussions – angers me. At our firm, we fight for justice for the victims of DUI tragedies, and it infuriated me to know that a loophole such as this existed in our state.

If you or a loved one is ever in a DUI automobile accident, we’ll be there to help you. It can be one of the most emotionally and physically draining times of your life. We will stand by you, to help get you the justice and compensation you deserve, by holding the drunk driver responsible for their careless actions.

Let’s keep our South Carolina roadways as safe as possible and stay away from the driver seat of any type of vehicle while under the influence.

Jaguar Announces Another XK/XKR Special Edition for UK, Europe

17 Feb

Jaguar XK Special Edition

Jaguar has announced additional special-edition versions of the XK and XKR for those who crave a little extra opulence from their sleek British sports car. The special gear is available for both coupe and convertible models of the sports cars—only not in North America. Most of what makes the cars special is found inside, which is chock-full of even fancier leathers and materials than can be ordered for normal XKs.

Jaguar XK Special Edition

The Artisan interior, as Jaguar is calling it, gets “scraffito”-finished leather on the seats, door panels, and instrument cluster hood. Poltrona Frau leather covers the headliner, ensuring that the cabin is swathed in as much cowhide as possible. Buyers can choose from two interior color schemes, navy blue and truffle brown, and can spec either dark walnut or aluminum trim. Standard heated sport seats, a heated steering wheel, a 525-watt Bowers & Wilkins audio system, unique sill plates, and stainless-steel pedals finish off the  accommodations.

Jaguar XK Special Edition

Not much is altered on the exteriors of the special-edition XKs, although two attractive 20-inch wheel designs are available. Six exterior colors are on offer, including one (Celestial Black) exclusive to the special-edition cars, and convertible shoppers can pick from among four hues for the cloth top. So it’s not so bad that the extra-special Jags aren’t going to be sold here in the U.S.; with no notable visual distinctions from a plebe-level XK or XKR, passersby won’t be the wiser. We’d rather have the track-ready version of the higher-performance XKR-S that Jaguar is currently considering building, anyway.

Altec Recalls Hazardous Vehicles

16 Feb

The manufacturer Altec Industries Inc. is recalling specific model year 2008-2011 utility vehicles, because their tree guard switch bracket may have been installed incorrectly, potentially resulting in injuries or property damage. The potential number of units affected is 18. Altec will notify owners, and instruct unit owners to inspect and correct any incorrect installations, according to news reports.

As a Florence personal injury lawyer, I hope that nobody is adversely affected by this recalled product. If you or someone dear to you was injured by a product, you may want to get in touch with a personal injury attorney who can fight to protect your rights, answer any important legal questions you may have concerning your case, and guide you through the legal processes associated with your claim. When you have an attorney working hard to protect and defend your rights, you are more likely to get the results you need for your case. I am always glad to hear when a company has announced a recall, because it means they are attempting to prevent future harm. After receiving immediately medical attention, a customer who sustained an injury from a product should get in touch with safety authorities and legal representation to protect their rights in court. An attorney is available to work through your case and get the best results possible.

Ducati Recalls Two Motorcycles

16 Feb

The manufacturer Ducati North America is recalling certain model year 2011-2012 Hypermotard and Monster motorcycles manufactured from June 25, 2011, to November 30, 2011 because the fuel lines contain micro-cracking. This may lead to a fire hazard and result in damage to property or injuries for bystanders. Ducati will notify owners, and dealers will replace the fuel lines free of cost, according to news reports.

As a Columbia personal injury lawyer, I hope that nobody is harmed by an unsafe product. I am glad to see when a company announces a recall because they are making efforts to prevent future safety problems. If you or someone dear to you was injured by a product, you can contact a personal injury attorney who can evaluate your claim and work through each legal process associated with your claim. When you have an attorney on your side, you can rest assured someone is fighting hard to protect and defend your legal rights. An attorney can not only discuss any legal questions you may have, but help you through the steps concerning your personal injury claim. Informing safety authorities is an important step because it helps prevent others from being harmed by the same product. Finding legal representation can also make it more likely that you’ll get the results you desire for your claim.

Future Audi Assistance and Lighting Tech to Include Stop-and-Go Lane Keeping and OLEDs

15 Feb

Audi

Audi recently threw open the doors to its research facility to demonstrate some of its latest safety technology, much of it fed by advanced sensors and enhanced by digital networks. The long-term target of all premium carmakers, like it or not, is a car that gives its driver the choice to drive themselves or leave the task entirely up to the vehicle. The first steps down this road have been taken already with radar systems and optical cameras, as well as in independent vehicle-automation projects; laser-based technology will be added in the future.

Sensing Surroundings for Earlier Collision-Avoidance

Audi is enhancing the currently available systems to evaluate and deal with various traffic situations. One example: As a car equipped with today’s most advanced accident-avoidance systems recognizes a stationary or slow-moving obstacle in its lane, the warning and subsequent automatic braking happen long after the initial reading in order to allow the driver to simply swerve around the obstacle in question. But in the future, the surroundings will be monitored as well. If the car’s sensors recognize that changing lanes is impossible because of surrounding traffic, guardrails, or walls, automatic braking will be initiated much earlier. It works: We tested the setup in a Q7, and the system executed a vigorous stop when the other lanes were blocked by balloons tasked with simulating VW Golfs.

Audi adaptive cruise control

Automatic Stop-and-Go Driving

Driving under stop-and-go conditions also is envisioned to be fully automated up to 40 mph or so, and this includes keeping the vehicle in its lane, not just the speed. There’s more: At junctions, thanks to radar sensors and car-to-car communication systems, a driver’s vehicle will recognize dangerous cross traffic before he possibly could and alert him. The same goes for behind the car: the radar sensors that already exist for parking-aid systems will give even earlier warning of approaching traffic. You also will be warned when you are attempting to get out of a vehicle you’ve just parallel-parked, as the system recognizes cars and bicycles approaching from behind. Audi has come up with clever ways of providing visual and acoustic warnings; our favorite is a metallic strip on the inside of the doors that illuminates with red LEDs when sensors detect approaching traffic.

Trailer-Reverse Guidance

Of course, cars from a number of automakers can already parallel park themselves, and the tolerances for such systems soon will become even tighter, enabling them to pull your vehicle into much smaller spaces. But an advancement of similar tech will have rookie trailer-towing drivers rejoicing: It can keep the trailer on an exact, pre-selected path when reversing. This system works not only when backing up in a straight line, but also when you attempt to enter a parking spot with a trailer. In the A7 prototype we drove, the steering angle was selected with the MMI controller; it ultimately required some planning and an early selection of the path, but worked beautifully. Given the pre-planning and the fact that it only works at low speeds, however, experienced haulers accustomed to maneuvering trailers will move faster without the assistance.

Audi taillight road visability laser

Lights Up, Dark Down

One of the most fascinating areas we explored was in lighting, and it’s there that design gets to play a part, too. At Audi—and at most other luxury manufacturers—it’s clear that LED headlamps will replace xenon units across the lineup; beyond that, so-called matrix-beam lamps will mark the next generation of LED headlights. Their light is emitted from several sources so that some can be illuminated to create high beams—and then switched off to spare oncoming traffic. Still more light sources can be switched on to highlight obstacles or pedestrians recognized by night-vision systems. An Audi executive predicts these functions will reach its vehicles “in the near future.”

Audi also would like to introduce taillights of variable brightness. Why? In fog or heavy rain, drivers tend to visually “attach” to the cars directly ahead, regardless of visibility farther down the road. This has been identified as a frequent cause of pile-ups, despite many vehicles around the world already being fitted with brighter rear fog lamps. A rather futuristic element, also designed for foggy conditions, is a laser light source integrated in the taillights that would generate a red bar on the road visible to all; it also would generate a red triangle that is visible only to vehicles directly to the rear. (BMW also is working on laser lighting.) It’s worth mentioning that U.S. regulations could be a major roadblock to introducing these lighting concepts here; as an example, a federal exemption allowed Mercedes to offer its flashing brake lights for a short time on its V-12 S- and CL-class cars—they flash in cases of severe braking to warn drivers approaching from behind—but the exemption was pulled.

Audi also is experimenting with organic LEDs, which create a homogenous light effect, rather than the many points of light of traditional LEDs. But this is also just one step of many ahead. Eventually, the company envisions three-dimensional lighting elements integrated into the body, and it also is studying creating areas on vehicles on which lighting sources can move freely and form shapes to visually depict the driver’s intentions. Audi calls it “the fourth dimension,” and showed examples of the lighting—as well as laser front- and rear lights—on the A2 concept during last fall’s Frankfurt auto show. While road safety still is the main trigger for lighting technologies, we notice a lot of playfulness in these innovative applications.
