Aston Martin Vantage V12

About a month ago, Aston Martin released two teaser photos of its V12 Vantage coupe ahead of its debut.

On the face of it, the V12 Vantage RS is little more than a standard Vantage with the DB9’s V12 engine shoehorned into it. Okay, the heavily vented bonnet and enlarged rear wing should give a clue, yet they don’t prepare you for this engine being a pure racing unit as powerful as that in the DBR9 racer.

Nobody is talking precise numbers, but there’s general agreement that it produces at least 600bhp. The car also has semi-racing suspension, carbon-ceramic disc brakes and a kerb weight of 3,300lb – some 286lb less than the normal Vantage despite the greater weight of a 6 litre V12 over the 4.3 litre V8. The savings have been made by removing soundproofing, airbags and air-conditioning, and fitting a number of carbon-fibre panels.

The RS has about the same power as Ferrari’s quickest car, the 599GTB, but weighs some 880lb less. So all other things being equal, in a drag race between the Vantage and Ferrari’s fastest, the Italian stallion would be left choking in the dust of this very British bulldog. Again, no numbers are quoted, but 0-60mph in 3.5sec and 0-100mph in 7sec won’t be far from the truth.

Aston Martin DBS Volante

The Geneva Motor Show has been a busy one for Aston Martin. The latest addition to the Aston range comes in the form of the DBS Volante.

The DBS Volante is AM’s 16th convertible in its 95 year history and represents the ultimate combination of luxury with open air sports car performance. The motorised retractable fabric roof can be opened in just 14 seconds and stows away under the newly sculpted tonneau.

Powered by Aston Martin’s 6.0-litre V12 engine with 510bhp (380kW) and 570Nm (420 lb ft) of torque, the Volante is not just a poser’s car. Naught to 100km/h comes in 4.3 seconds and top end is 307km/h (191mph). It’s a proper performance GT with two rear seats though Aston does concede the rear seats won’t be as spacious as those of a normal sedan. This is not a normal car however, it’s a DBS Volante.

The two available gearbox choices are a 6-speed manual and an automatic six-speed ‘Touchtronic’ that can be engaged via paddles. Keeping the car on the road are 8.5′ x 20 Pirelli P Zero 245/35 front wheels and tyres as well as 11 x 20 Pirelli P Zero 295/30 at the rear. Stopping power comes from carbon ceramic brakes. Engineers have utilised measures like carbon fiber front wings, boot lid and bonnet to reduce weight. In the end it weighs 1810kg which is similar to mid-sized German luxury sedans.

Inside passengers get comfortable to features like the Bang & Olufsen’s BeoSound 13-speaker sound system, integrated iPod connector, a USB connector and a Hard Disk Drive (HDD) satellite navigation system.

Ferrari 599

ferrari_599.jpg

Ferrari has announced that it will show us two special 599s at the Geneva motor show next week.

The Ferrari F599 will gain a handling package called the ‘GT Evoluzione’ and will feature stiffer suspension, and lighter alloy racing wheels. It will also feature uprated performance brakes and this amazing triple-coat Rosso Corsa red paint too.

Even more exciting is the news that Ferrari will also be showing a hugely exclusive F599XX model which will be a super hardcore track only model featuring a V12 developed from Ferraris latest racing technology.

Like the previous FXX it’s unlikely that the F599XX will be road legal so unless you can afford to buy one chances are you are going to have to go to a track to see it in the metal.
