Volvo Boss: Five-Door V40 Hatch “Probably Not” Coming to the U.S., New XC90 Again Confirmed for 2014

18 Jan

Volvo’s upcoming V40 hatchback is set to debut at the 2012 Geneva auto show, but it will “probably not” come to the U.S., the company’s CEO, Stefan Jacoby, told us recently.

The hatchback, which is based on architecture evolved from the jointly used platform underpinning the S40 sedan, Ford Focus, and Mazda 3, doesn’t fit into the company’s product plans in the States. Volvo said in the past year that it would delete both the S40 sedan and the V50 wagon from its U.S. product lineup; the C70 convertible, meanwhile, has been given an expiration date of January 1, 2014, and no replacement has been confirmed. We’ve even heard that the C30 hatchback, a three-door car that’s not terribly practical, may bite the bullet globally.

Jacoby explained that Volvo is paring its U.S. lineup to focus on its volume products: the S60 sedan, the XC70 wagon, and the XC60 and XC90 crossovers. In relative terms, Volvo is a small company—it sold roughly 67,000 cars in the U.S. in 2011, compared to about 306,000 by BMW—and can’t support marketing, sales, and service for a broad range of products.

New XC90 Crossover in 2014

Jacoby also (re-)confirmed that a new XC90—the current version of which debuted at the Detroit auto show in 2002—finally will arrive in the U.S. in 2014. The image you see above is one of a trio of preview sketches the company released at the most recent L.A. auto show.

While Volvo is currently shrinking its American lineup, it nevertheless is still busy preparing new products. The company’s flexible new SPA architecture is moving along and will launch in a few years; the same is true of a new, highly configurable four-cylinder-engine family. (You can read more about both in our coverage of the recent Volvo Concept You.) Using similar chassis and powertrain tech across the entire portfolio will drastically reduce service complexity and equipment costs for dealers, so it’s possible that Volvo will again offer a wider range of products here once these engines and platforms join with sheetmetal.

“This iQ is an awful small machine.” —Car and Driver, 2012

Manufacturers are so jittery about peddling micro subcompacts that they’ve resorted to intellectual flattery. ?A thinking person would surely have purchased a TH!NK, at least before Ford lost faith in its Norwegian electric-car experiment and expelled it from class. If ?you’re the brainy sort, you’d naturally opt for a Smart Fortwo, recently suspended by Roger Penske and sent off to see the stern principal, Mr. Daimler. ?And now comes the Mensa bunch, whose IQs would surely route them to an iQ, at least if this latest Scion can find a class that will accept its grades. For the nonce, the iQ is standing in the A-segment hall, late for class, occasionally tapping timorously on the homeroom door.

Sync Destinations Update Adds Predictive Traffic Routing

17 Jan

Ford SYNC Destinations 2012 CES

Behind the booth with a live DJ and next to the crowd-magnet Evos concept at Ford’s CES display, the automaker showed off a new version of Sync Destinations, the turn-by-turn navigation app on Sync-equipped cars. Using traffic data from development partner INRIX, Sync Destinations adds a lot of the features found on INRIX’s own Traffic! Pro app for smartphones and integrates them into the car.

As on the INRIX app, the smartphone portion of Sync Destinations shows local traffic maps and nearby incidents. It also uses predictive traffic models, so that the best route to a destination considers how traffic will be when you get there, not how it is when you leave. A further component of that function is departure-time recommendation, so you can choose when to leave to minimize travel time. Sync Destinations also allows you to report an accident, which then gets uploaded to the INRIX server to improve traffic reports. Most of these functions are available using voice commands when the smartphone is connected to the car.

Sync Destinations is already available for iPhone users in the iTunes App Store and is coming to both Android and BlackBerry phones later this year.

2012 CES: Audi’s Super Head-Up Display

17 Jan

Audi head-up display

While the Mercedes-Benz DICE concept at the 2012 Consumer Electronics Show previews a super-futuristic cockpit that we found isn’t quite ready for the present, Audi showed off a similar system that seems much closer to reality. Sadly, the head-up display lacks a fancy acronym or portmanteau typical of the German automakers, but we were nonetheless impressed.

Atop the mocked-up dashboard sit three head-up projectors and a reflector screen (in a real car, the windshield serves as that screen). The driver’s display is not visible from the passenger side, and vice versa. A center display is shared and functions much like the infotainment screen in current Audis.

Audi head-up display

The driver’s display works a lot like the HUDs found in certain GM and BMW products, but with a twist. Instead of showing an image that appears about eight feet in front of the car as in current systems (and as in the other two on two views on this Audi’s demonstration), images are projected between 35 and 100 feet in front of the car. This means that navigation information such as direction arrows are overlaid directly onto the street. Or, like when we saw an arrow on passers-by in the Audi booth, information could end up overlaid on the car in front of you. Still, the large display and far-away focal distance are a big improvement compared to current HUD systems.

Audi head-up display

Because the passenger display is invisible to the driver, it can show far more distracting items such as videos or detailed point-of-interest information. Audi’s concept also uses gesture controls, but it’s far simpler than the Mercedes-Benz DICE system. In fact, you can only swipe up, down, left, and right. Left-right motions pass items on the center screen to and from the outside screens, so pushing a navigation destination to the passenger could bring up detailed information, while pushing it to the driver could set it as a destination and immediately show the route. Up-down motions scroll through the different main functions on the center screen.

The simplicity of the Audi system means it’s far more reliable than the more advanced system Mercedes showed, and the technology required to transform Audi’s displays into reality is pretty much already available. But it’s still a long way off from production availability. For now Audi only plans to continue to develop the system and research how it impacts driver distraction.

2012 CES: Hands On with the Mercedes-Benz DICE Interior Concept

17 Jan

Mercedes-Benz DICE demonstration

This year’s Consumer Electronics Show showed more evidence of the inevitable convergence of the digital life and driving. Regardless of whether you see this as a benefit or the coming of the robot apocalypse, nearly every automaker has a plan to make our vehicles as connected as our smartphones. Mercedes-Benz’s vision is shown in the Dynamic & Intuitive Control Experience (DICE) concept that was shown on the German company’s CES stand. DICE in this demo situation is actually housed in a cube, with a car interior designed in the style of a gleaming-white Kubrickian future.

There are two main components to the system: the front screen and the control scheme. In the demonstration, all kinds of information is shown on the windshield, from incoming phone calls to navigation directions. A second screen that spans the dashboard provides instrumentation and more detailed infotainment information. The demonstration car had us “driving” along the Embarcadero in San Francisco. Pass by a restaurant, shop, or even the Oakland Bay Bridge, and the screen puts a small circle over the point of interest to denote that more information is available.

Mercedes-Benz DICE demonstration

This is where the control scheme comes in, as DICE is completely gesture-based. Interaction with the information requires you to first motion in the general area of what you want to highlight. To select, you make a pushing motion, like with a button. When more information is displayed, you can either swipe to the right to save the information for later, or dismiss it. Saved information moves down into the dash screen, which is also controlled with gestures and allows you to play music, make phone calls, or bring up navigation destinations.

But it turns out the future is either a long way off or will be incredibly frustrating. The demonstration cockpit works in theory, and the Mercedes-Benz engineer giving the walk-though was able to use the system with ease. I found things to be slightly more difficult, as even selecting and activating items on the windshield proved difficult. The system uses cameras to track the motion and the button-press motion requires you to close your fingers down to a point—a simple forward motion with the hands is not recognized as a press. In the dashboard display, selecting the central functions (such as navigation, audio, and phone) proved frustrating. And I was pretty much hopeless when attempting to scroll through the driver information functions to the left of the steering wheel.

Mercedes-Benz DICE demonstration

Of course DICE is purely a concept, but it does bring up a number of issues with gesture-based controls, primarily that they require very accurate motion recognition. The demonstration cube also constantly tracks the occupants, so it doesn’t know if you’re merely gesturing during conversation or need to find directions to the nearest hospital. That said, the idea of augmented reality projected onto the windshield and fully integrated into the car is remarkable. Our only hope is that the driving experience of the future will be as compelling.
