2012 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 Tested! The Most Powerful Camaro Ever Packs More Than Just Engine

2012 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1

Midway down the main straight at Inde Motorsports Ranch outside Tucson, Arizona, the shift lights on the head-up display flash. At 106 mph, we grab fourth gear, and another wave of ferocious acceleration propels the car forward. We graze 130 mph before hitting the brakes and downshifting for Turn Three, a fast right-hand sweeper that puts the coupe’s stability—and our own intestinal fortitude—to the test. As soon as we get back on the throttle and glance at the windshield-projected speed, we’re already doing 110.

The Physics Of: How the HANS Device Saves Lives

In the dark ages of motorsports, relatively minor accidents were often fatal. Case in point: Patrick Jacquemart’s 1981 head-on collision into a dirt bank at Mid-Ohio while testing his Renault 5 Turbo IMSA GTU racer. Even though damage to the car was minor, Jacquemart died from a basilar skull fracture—a break in the bones at the base of the skull resulting in severe brain trauma.

2013 Audi A6 Allroad Announced: No, It Won’t Be Sold Here

13 Jan

2013 Audi A6 Allroad Quattro

Just after we first saw the U.S.-spec 2013 Audi A4 Allroad at the Detroit auto show, the company’s German mothership announced the one-size-up third-generation A6 Allroad. Unlike its smaller sibling, however, it won’t be sold here.

What exactly are we missing? At its heart, an opportunity to drop a lot of coin on a wagon stuffed with most of what makes the latest A6 sedan—which made our 10Best list this year—so good. That includes available all-LED headlamps; touchpad-equipped MMI with a power-retractable eight-inch screen, Google Earth, and mobile hotspot services; and elegant cabin trim. Compared with the standard A6, the new Allroad rides 2.4 inches higher and features the usual Allroad garb, including flared fenders, front and rear stainless-steel skid plates, and shiny vertical grille slats. The exhaust finishers are flattened, wheels are available in 18-, 19-, and 20-inch sizes, and a new “Java Braun” exterior color is unique to the Allroad. (Brown wagon? Yes, please.) As with the A4 Allroad, the fenders of the A6 Allroad can be ordered in a contrasting color or be painted to match the body. The cabin is set apart with its all-black dashboard and carpets, as well as aluminum trim emblazoned with the word “Allroad.”

Beneath the skin, the A6 Allroad can host any of four V-6 powertrains; choices include one supercharged 3.0-liter gasoline-burner with 310 hp and 325 lb-ft of torque and three 3.0-liter diesels ranging in output from 204 hp and 332 lb-ft to 313 hp and 479 lb-ft.

The most significant mechanical distinction between the Allroad and other A6 Avants, however, involves the adaptive air suspension, which lowers the car by 0.6 inch at speed and can lift it by 1.4 inches at the touch of a button when the going gets a little tougher. We doubt many of the Allroad’s swanky buyers will do much serious off-roading with their luxurious haulers; if so, they might have been better off investigating what they could get for their €54,600 (the base price for the A6 Allroad in Germany) or more at the Land Rover dealer. We’d just like Americans to have the opportunity to make that decision at all.

TRD Shows Performance Parts for Toyota GT 86, Similar Items Will Be Available for Scion FR-S

TRD Toyota GT-86 parts

Toyota’s performance parts and racing division, TRD, has revealed a new line of accessories and performance parts for the GT 86 sports car—which will be sold here as the Scion FR-S—at the Tokyo auto salon. Besides the expected body kit, the TRD upgrades are pretty extensive. There’s a big-brake kit, an adjustable suspension, a set of forged aluminum 18-inch wheels, sport seats, a performance exhaust, and a front strut-tower brace. The exterior items look sharp—especially that quad-outlet exhaust!—and the performance pieces are enticing. And don’t get us started on how awesome those sports seats look. So far, no direct power upgrades are offered (unless the exhaust provides a slight bump in output).

TRD Toyota GT-86 parts

The big question, however, is whether these or similar parts will be available to Scion FR-S owners here in the States. The FR-S is identical to the GT 86 save for its badges, so we assume most of these TRD accessories should bolt right on. A Scion representative told us to expect some “impressive” performance parts for the FR-S, but didn’t provide specifics. The parts will be branded TRD, like the performance parts available for other Scion models. Let’s hope some of these make the list.

GM Prez: 2013 Chevrolet Colorado Pickup to Target Tacoma, Could Spin Off a GMC Version

13 Jan

2013 Chevrolet Colorado

The upcoming Chevy Colorado pickup truck will directly target the Toyota Tacoma, says GM North America president Mark Reuss.

“Tacoma is the volume leader. We know that there’s a buyer for a really good Chevrolet lifestyle sport truck that’s quite different than the Tacoma.” Different how? Reuss and his colleagues won’t say. But, having seen the Asian-market Colorado, we’re not expecting any dramatic differences between it and the truck Chevy sells here. The U.S.-market Colorado will still be a body-on-frame affair, after all. And we already know what it looks like, inside and out.

It’s possible Reuss brought up the Tacoma simply in reference to the Colorado being extremely capable in addition to it competing in the mid-size truck segment. Although “mid-size” is relative—Reuss says the Colorado will be something like 90 to 95 percent of the size of a Silverado. (Full specs for the Colorado, even in overseas markets, haven’t yet been released.)

There also could be a GMC version, Reuss says. That seems like a no-brainer, but GM isn’t confirming anything at this point. If it does happen, we’re told that the GMC will be significantly differentiated from the Chevy version. We’re not sure how this could mean much more than a different fascia—a truck is a truck, after all—but we would like to see what the General’s stylists have in store.

In discussing the Colorado, Reuss also referred to fuel efficiency and a “powertrain change” versus the Silverado. We figure this probably just means the Colorado packs a four- or six-cylinder engine, but a diesel unit is a possibility. The company recently announced plans to offer the Chevy Cruze with a diesel four in 2013, and the Colorado is sold in most parts of Asia exclusively with two diesel V-6 engines.

Even though GM has confirmed that yes, the Colorado will be built and sold here, it isn’t talking timing yet. We expect an appearance in the next year, though.

Dry Dog Food Recalled for Illnesses

13 Jan

O’Neal’s Feeders Supply Inc. announced a recall of its dry Arrow Brand Dog Food manufactured between December  2010 and December 2011. The corn content has more than acceptable aflatoxin levels and this may cause illness in pets. The stores have been instructed to remove the above product from their shelves. Consumers can return the products to the stores of purchase in order to receive a full refund. Pets with any symptoms of illness need a veterinarian’s medical attention. For further details contact 800-256-2769 during working hours on week days, according to news reports.

As a Moncks Corner personal injury attorney, I hope that nobody experiences the grief of seeing their pet become ill. If you or someone you care for were harmed by a defective or unsafe product, get in touch with a personal injury lawyer who can help evaluate your claim, assess your case, and discuss your questions regarding the recall. A lawyer can help you get the best possible outcome for your claim by guiding you through the steps involved with the case. A company should be held liable for their products and help ensure their safety. When a company creates a defective product, they need to be accountable so further customers do not experience injuries.

Audi Shows 2013 A3 Interior at CES

13 Jan

Our spy photographers got us a peek at the upcoming Audi A3’s interior back in November, but now the cabin has officially debuted at the 2012 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. Without a car wrapped around it. (Or a back seat.)

As we saw both in the spy photos and on the A3 concept from last year’s Geneva auto show, the layout is clean and keeps the number of buttons to a minimum. At the center is a 7-inch-diagonal, 0.4-inch-thick pop-up screen using Audi’s latest version of MMI tailored specifically to small cars. Because of space constraints, using a separate touchpad and control wheel (as found on the A6, A7, and A8) was not possible, so Audi engineers combined the two. As in other touchpad-equipped Audis, the one in the A3 can be used to input letters and numbers into the infotainment system and pan around the navigation map. It works for some additional functions here, such as swiping back and forth through the album browser function with a connected iPod. In front of the “touchwheel,” as Audi engineers call it, are the buttons for primary navigation through the MMI system. One other notable feature is that the seek/next track button is now integrated into the volume knob—it rocks right and left for the added functionality.

The A3 also debuts the use of what Audi calls the MMX (Multi-Media eXtension) board. Powered by Nvidia’s Tegra system-on-a-chip family (the A3 uses a Tegra 2), a single plug-in board slightly larger than a playing card runs all of the infotainment and instrument-cluster displays. The key to the MMX is that it’s modular and separate from the rest of the car’s development cycle, so upgrades can be implemented in a short period of time. For instance, a new Tegra 3 MMX board that Audi showed at CES could be swapped directly with no other modifications, although Audi has not announced where we’ll see the Tegra 3 first.

The new architecture and faster processor (compared to older MMI systems) allow for a few interesting tweaks to the user interface. Scroll through the main menu and a preview of the corresponding function’s screen displays in the middle. When you adjust car settings, a fully rendered 3D model of the car pops up on screen and shows the user exactly what is being adjusted. Turn the brightness of the ambient lighting in the doors down, for instance, and the model will show a close-up of the interior with the lights getting dimmer.

One last innovation announced as an option on the A3 is what Audi calls the “Phone Box” in the center console. At the base of the bin is a near-field contact point that passes the signal from the phone’s antenna through to the car’s more powerful exterior antenna. The result is that the driver leaves the phone in the box for less distraction and benefits from better reception.

We expect to see the A3 interior again—inside the production car this time—at the Geneva show in March.

Lasagna Dinner Mix Recalled for Undeclared Soy

13 Jan

About 8,400 cartons of Hill Country Fare 6.4 oz. Lasagna Dinner mix are being recalled subsequent to the detection of creamy noodle tuna seasoning pouch found in one carton instead of the lasagna flavoring pouch. The inadvertent mix up in packaging results in presence of the Soy based ingredient in the tuna pouch that could trigger allergies in some people, as the pack is not expected to have this component at all. Consumers have been advised to return the item with batch No. UPC#41220-78102 to the stores for full refund, according to news reports.

Volkswagen Developing Plug-In Hybrid for the U.S.

13 Jan

2013 Volkswagen Jetta hybrid

Volkswagen is working on a plug-in hybrid for the U.S. market, we’ve learned. The car is still in development, but it should be ready for sale relatively soon.

Although the company is quiet about all of the details, we have been told that the car will pair an electric motor with the 150-hp, 1.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine in the new Jetta hybrid (and headed for nonhybrid Jettas in the near-ish future). A battery pack of unknown capacity will allow for an electric-only range of between 30 and 35 miles.

The system should be very similar to the setup in the Jetta hybrid, with the obvious addition of a plug for recharging and a larger-capacity battery. A company exec says the plug-in hybrid powertrain will be installed in a “mass segment” vehicle; we think  a plug-in version of the Jetta hybrid might make the most sense. Other possibilities include the Passat—its larger size and price tag might carry the dual burdens of a plug-in better—or the Beetle, which would give the powertrain a more stylish package.

Ford Recalls Escape for Leaking Brake Fluid

12 Jan

Ford Motor Company is recalling its Escape models manufactured from October 22, 1999 to July 19, 2002, specifically those which have a brake master fluid reservoir. The consequences of the problem is that it will leak brake fluid which can come in contact with the ‘anti lock braking system’ (ABS) module wiring harness connector, which may cause fire due to corrosion. The company will notify its costumer about the recall and the recall will officially begin on January 23, 2012. For more information, customers can contact to Ford helpline number that is 1-866-436-7332, according to news reports.

As a Greenville personal injury lawyer, I hope nobody is adversely affected in an auto accident resulting from a defect caused by the automaker. If you or a loved one were hurt by a defective product, discuss your claim with a personal injury attorney who can help to evaluate your claim, discuss your case, and answer any personal injury questions you may have regarding your case. A Ford vehicle should be reliable, and the company needs to be held responsible for any wrongdoing. A lawyer will work hard to fight for your legal rights and help ensure your case is fully evaluated and all answers you may have are answered completely.
